Wild Morning
Minneapolis photographer, Dave Puente and writer, Brittany Chaffee partnered to document the morning rituals of women. Through Dave's lens and Brittany's pen, their hopes, dreams and fears are woven together in the form of a rich and tactile coffee table book.
I worked collaboratively with Dave and Britany — going through their extensive library of content to bring the stories of thirty-five women to life.
process
Between their many sessions together with their subjects, Dave and Brittany had an enormous amount of content. After a design direction was agreed upon, we began a process of pairing poems and images. Dave and Brittany each had a number of must-have images and poems for inclusion into the book. The remaining pages came together in over 200 pages as poems and pictures naturally found their emotional pairing.
Concept
The design direction was driven by the notion of viewing this work in a contemporary art exhibition. What might that look like? What might that feel like? I was intrigued by the idea creating a compact version of this experience — large, positive and negative spaces with matted images and unobtrusive type.
Typography
Tall and strong, yet with soft, sturdy edges —the sans serif typeface, Ultramagnetic is used for titles and headlines. The excellent legibility and soft geometric forms of the sans serif, Glober act as a compliment to Ultramagnetic for all paragraph copy .
